India is the diabetic capital of the world. 50 million Indians suffer from diabetes. And this disease claims 1 million Indian lives every year. According to a study conducted at the National Diabetes Summit 2013, the number of diabetic patients in India is expected to reach an alarming number of 101.2 million by 2030.
Pancreatic islets are cell clusters in our pancreas. There are different type of cells out of which “beta cells” are the ones that produce hormone insulin. The pancreas produce enzymes that help our body digest food. When blood sugar levels rise in our body after eating, the pancreas secrete insulin into our bloodstream.
What does insulin do? Insulin absorbs the glucose in the bloodstream. In the case of a diabetic person, the pancreas don’t produce enough insulin or the body cells don’t use insulin efficiently. In some cases, both these can happen simultaneously. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood & doesn’t get absorbed by the cells.
Diabetes can be caused due to various reasons like a stressful & sedentary lifestyle, a high calorie diet, and even genetic susceptibility. Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, thirst and hunger. When coupled with hypertension, diabetes can create havoc in a patient’s life.
