The doctor has asked you to go and get an MRI for him to be able to get a correct diagnosis of what’s going on. For people who have never had a scan before, this can be a little bit of an unnerving experience. So we thought we’d help put together a list of things you need to know before you head for your scan, during and after! Hope this helps!

Before you arrive!

• Make sure that you are following doctors orders and it is appropriate for you to have an MRI scan.
• Confirm your appointment and arrive a little earlier than the time booked.
• There will be a list of basic questions that you will be asked and you will need to complete a questionnaire before your get a scan.
• You can eat and drink and take prescribed medicine as normal, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
• Wear clothes without zips or metal buttons and leave jewellery and watches at home or in your bag.
• Let the centers know in advance if one has any disabilities so that they can ensure that they can offer your high quality and make all necessary arrangements.
• You are welcome to bring a friend or family member along for support, but you must know that for safety reasons, they will not be allowed into the examination room.

Prep before the MRI scan!

• Once you arrive a nurse or a member from the radiography team will meet you and explain the procedure to you and go through a safety checklist with you.
• You might be asked to change into a hospital gown if you’re clothes are not suitable for the MRI machine.
• You can feel free to ask any questions at this time about the scanning process.
• There might be a need to give you an injection (known as a contrast medium) to increase the amount of information that is received from the MRI scan depending on what is being scanned.

During the scan.

• The examination consists of several scans, each lasting a few minutes with a short pause between each. The whole procedure will take between 15 minutes to an hour, depending on which part(s) of the body need to be scanned.
• You will be asked to lie down on the scanner bed and be as comfortable and as still as possible. You won’t feel anything in an MRI but there will be some mechanical noise from the equipment. You will be given or can request for some ear plugs!

After the scan!

• There are no restrictions post the scan. You can eat and drink normally, drive and go back to work immediately after the MRI scan.
• If you have been given a contrast injection, the radiologist will have to examine the images shortly after your scan to make sure they got it right.
• Reports get sent to the doctors or you can collect them, but for ethical and professional reasons, they need to be discussed by your consulting doctor and not the radiologist.
